We’re Selected as Preferred Contractor by Henry Brothers

TRD have been selected by leading construction company Henry Brothers to carry out the demolition of Glossop School in Glossop as part of a £21.7 million investment from Derbyshire County Council.

The multi-phased project will see a new, state of the art school constructed on the Hadfield site next to the existing school which will be demolished once the new school is built to make way for sports pitches, landscaping and car parking.

Following a public consultation it was agreed last year to go ahead with proposals to merge the school’s three separate sites onto Newshaw Lane, Hadfield.

County Councillor Damien Greenhalgh said: “We’re delighted that work has started on this fantastic new single-site school.

“Despite facing unprecedented cuts and huge financial pressures we’re working hard to provide our young people with the facilities they need to help them thrive and learn in a positive environment and we’ll continue to do what we can within a tight budget to invest in our communities to make our schools fit for the 21st century.”

The County Council consulted on plans for a new school after revealing many parts of existing buildings were in poor condition with estimated repair bills totalling more than £5 million. Additional funds for the project will be raised through the sale of the college’s two sites on Talbot Road.

Glossop School

Most of the existing school buildings were built in the 1950s and 60s and were coming to the end of their life.

College Principal Steve Playford said: “The Glossopdale community is really excited that the construction has started.

“The new school will dramatically improve the learning experience with the latest technologies, a specially designed sixth form centre, performance wing and leisure centre with astroturf pitch.”

The new school includes:

- state of the art classrooms for teaching academic and vocational subjects;

- high quality IT infrastructure;

- superb sports facilities including the current full size all weather pitch;

- a dedicated learning area for children with special educational needs or disabilities;

- spaces for performing arts drama and music;

- a sixth form centre with a private study area and tutorial rooms;

- specialised separate leisure facilities for community use.

Design features include maximising natural light and temperature efficient insulation which keeps the buildings warm in winter and cool in summer.

The new single-site school in Glossopdale can cater for 1,000 students aged 11-16 with capacity for 200 6th Form students. The site is large enough to allow for future expansion if required.

TRD’s works included the soft-strip, asbestos removal, demolition and site clearance of multiple, two-storey former school structures. Our works also included:

- breaking up floor slabs;

- grubbing up foundations and substructures to 2.0m deep;

- on-site crushing of all hard material; separated into material types i.e. concrete, brick and tarmac and stockpiled;

- general site clearance including pre-start fly tipping;

- disposal of all remaining arisings;

- all falsework, temporary work or scaffolding required for demolition;

- removal and disposal of diesel/storage vessels;

- all live drains were left in place and old connections capped off and marked above ground;

- all trees were retained.
