The scheme consisted of the demolition of the traditional and steel framed former Broadbent's Engineering Works on the University's Western Campus.

PROJECT SCOPE

The scheme consisted of the demolition and site clearance (including asbestos removal) of the traditional and steel framed former Broadbent's Engineering Works on the University's Western Campus. Work started in April 2016 and was completed in July 2016.

High-level Summary of Project

The scope of works included:- All buildings (other than Bath House) including foundations and hard standings incorporating the demolition of surface building superstructures, grubbing up of building slabs and foundations and external hard standings.

Set up of site;

Protection of underground voids;

Careful excavation of vegetation adj. sensitive boundaries;

Installation of palisade fencing (as per client design) to secure sensitive boundaries;

Physical separation, by specialist contractor, of redundant HV cable entering roadway at site boundary to ensure no risk to former sub-station as confirmation of physical disconnection was unable to be obtained;

Removal of licensed and NNLW asbestos containing materials;

Pre-planning of works on a weekly basis and agreement via weekly site meetings;

Programming of sensitive works, structures abutting pavement, during ‘Sunday’ period due to minimal student movement periods etc;

Protection of Grade II Listed building (Bath House);

Decommissioning and careful excavation and removal of two buried fuel tanks;

The crushing of recyclable materials including stone, brick and concrete;

On-site continual environmental monitoring incl. noise, dust, nuisance;

Clients Required Salvage Item - salvage and safely store for the client an original 1916 large stone date tablets located above the internal 5.0m wide opening into Building 1B which was the north external elevation onto the originally extended Chapel Street.

Special Considerations

 

Special Considerations were made to the following event dates:

Exam dates – 3rd May to 27th May & 4th July to 8th July; University Award Ceremony – 11th to 20th July; University Open Days – 23rd June and 29th June; School of Architecture (Queen Street South) Open days; Ramadan 2016 - 6th June to 5th July; Faith Centre – Friday prayer meetings - between 12:00 and 14:30.

Timescales

This programme of works was fully completed in 4 months.
